ARCS Forward: The Changing Ocean Habitat
Thursday, May 18, at 12:00 PM ET/11:00 AM CT/10:00 AM MT/9:00 AM PT/7:00 AM HT
ARCS Forward events are personal and intimate conversations between members, current scholars, and other outstanding scientists in all STEM fields. These events are held virtually over Zoom. This month's speakers are ARCS Scholars Jessica "Jessie" Perelman, PhD (Honolulu Chapter) and Jeremea "Mea" Songco-Casey (Oregon Chapter). This event will be moderated by Diana Gordon (Oregon Chapter).
During the May session, we will hear from Jessica "Jessie" Perelman, PhD about her research on remote, deep-sea environments and the behavior of animals living in them. Next, Jeremea "Mea" Songco-Casey will talk about how octopuses process visual scenes in their habitats using molecules found in their visual systems. Join us for this informative talk about our oceans and the specific creatures who call them home.
Jessica "Jessie" Perelman, PhD completed her PhD in Oceanography at the University of Hawaiʻi in 2022. Her research has focused on remote, deep-sea habitats and understanding the behavior of large populations of animals who live there. She has sought to understand how these populations could be influenced by changing oceans and developing deep-sea mining industries. Jessica now works as a marine ecologist with the NOAA Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center and the Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research.
Jeremea "Mea" Songco-Casey is a fifth-year PhD student in the Niell lab at the University of Oregon. She is researching how octopuses process visual scenes by investigating the molecules found in the octopus visual system. Mea is originally from San Diego, California, where she got her B.A. in Psychology and a minor in English. In addition to conducting research, Mea has held leadership positions in graduate student organizations focused on empowering women and minorities, and she enjoys science outreach and communication.
