Jessica Meir Takes Bigger Steps in Space
ARCS Hall of Fame honoree Jessica Meir continues upward in her career with NASA . . . literally.
Meir has been the commander of the International Space Station since February 2026. She participated days ago in a spacewalk. On August 1, Meir and flight engineer Sophie Adenot of the European Space Agency spent hours in space to replace a navigational aid and complete maintenance tasks for the Space Station.
This was Meir’s seventh spacewalk. In 2019, she was one of the women to experience the first all-female spacewalk.
Meir was an ARCS Scholar from 2007 to 2009 at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego. Her research focused on the diving physiology of marine mammals and birds, focusing on oxygen depletion in diving emperor penguins and elephant seals.
She later worked for Lockheed Martin’s Human Research Facility (Johnson Space Center), supporting human physiology research on the space shuttle and International Space Station.
She was selected as an astronaut by NASA in 2013.
