ARCS Forward Looks Back: A Conversation with 2023 ARCS Alumni Hall of Fame Inductee Dr. Heidi Hammel

ARCS Forward events are personal and intimate conversations between members, current scholars, and other outstanding scientists in all STEM fields. These events are held virtually over Zoom. This month's speakers are ARCS Alumni Hall of Fame 2023 Inductee Heidi Hammel, PhD (Honolulu Chapter) and Ori Fox, PhD (Metro Washington Chapter). This event will be moderated by ARCS National President Beth Wainwright (Pittsburgh Chapter). Join us as we learn about Dr. Hammel’s stellar career in Astronomy and her path as a woman in science.
Heidi Hammel, PhD is currently the Vice President for Science for the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA). AURA operates world-class astronomical observatories, including the Hubble Space Telescope and James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) for NASA and the National Science Foundation's NORI Lab and National Solar Observatory. ARCS Foundation has recognized Dr. Hammel for her expertise in planetary science and her work with both the Hubble and James Webb Space Telescopes. She is also a Senior Research Scientist for the Space Science Institute and serves as Vice President of The Planetary Society, which advocates for advancing space science and planetary defense. Hammel received her ARCS Scholar award in 1983 while attending the University of Hawai'i at Manoa to complete a PhD in physics and astronomy. Read more about Dr. Hammel here.
Ori Fox, PhD has been an Astronomer at AURA's Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI), which operates the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Dr. Fox serves as a Instrument Scientist on JWST’s Launch and Operations Team and Project Scientist for the JWST Data Analysis Tools Software. For his research, Dr. Fox studies the ever-changing and transient Universe. He is Principal Investigator of several key JWST and HST observation programs to understand the evolution of stars and their metals. Dr. Fox is one of four founding Principal Investigators of the Transient Science at Space Telescope research group currently studying a vast array of topics including Supernovae, Gamma-Ray Bursts and Dark Energy. Together, Dr. Fox and his team are working on several projects at the forefront of astronomy using the Hubble Telescope, James Webb Space Telescope, and upcoming Roman Space Telescope.
