Scripps Research ranked top US nonprofit scientific institute

Posted on Thursday, July 11, 2019

ARCS Foundation academic partners represent some of the most renowned academic programs in the country.  Scripps Research, formally known as the Scripps Research Institute, was recently ranked the No. 1 US nonprofit scientific institute for the second consecutive year by 2019 Nature Index Annual Tables.

Scripps also received the No. 5 global ranking in the category encompassing nonprofits and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and is fourth globally in Chemistry and fifth for Life Sciences.

The June 20, 2019, rankings are based on discoveries reported in leading scientific journals and “highlight the institutions and countries which dominated research in the natural sciences in 2018,” according to Nature.

Scripps Research is an approved academic partner with ARCS San Diego Chapter. The chapter has provided 167 financial awards totaling more than $1 million in support of scholars at Scripps Research.  Dr. Peter Schultz, Scripps Research President and CEO, says he is grateful for ARCS Foundation’s strong support of young scientists in the San Diego community. “We look forward to continuing this valuable partnership that helps to educate and train the next generation of leaders.”

Scripps Research performs biomedical research and drug discovery on two campuses, one in La Jolla, California, and the other in Jupiter, Florida. Institute discoveries have led to nine approved drugs to date.

The bicoastal institute recently rebranded to reflect its mission to use research to improve lives. According to its website, the revitalized Scripps Research infinity loop logo “represents our continual pursuit of knowledge and the infinite promise within science to improve health.” The institute’s tagline is Science Changing Life.
