2019 PANEL: NEW FRONTIERS IN ROBOTICS

Thursday, September 19, 2019, 10:15 a.m.

The panel will start with a short summary of the state of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics at Oregon State University and how integration of policy and ethics impacts the program. Then, faculty will discuss the challenging ethical issues raised by the widespread adoption of AI and robotic technologies in areas ranging from social media and law enforcement to defense systems and health care. An ARCS Scholar and a Scholar Alum will focus on their robotic research, particularly how autonomous agents and robots interact with humans and how they perform in unknown environments.

Dr. Julie A. Adams is the associate director for Research at the Collaborative Robotics and Intelligent Systems (CoRIS) Institute and professor in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Oregon Sate University.

Dr. Cindy Grimm is the associate professor in the School of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering at Oregon State University.

Jennifer Leaf is a second year ARCS Foundation Oregon Scholar in Robotics at the College of Engineering at Oregon State University. Her research involves developing methods to measure resilience in multi-robot systems to assess and predict how well they perform in uncertain and dynamic environments.

Dr. Kagan Tumer is the director of the Collaborative Robotics and Intelligent Systems (CoRIS) Institute. He is a professor at the School of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering at Oregon State University. He studies how robots operate over long periods of time and ways to better manage, control, and optimize them.
