Science Podcasts to Listen to This Summer

Posted on Monday, June 10, 2024

When do you listen to podcasts? On long drives, during your daily walk or treadmill session, slowing down in the evening, or relaxing at the beach? Relax this summer and learn something new with these science podcast recommendations.

1. June is "Ocean Month." The National Ocean and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) has a podcast about recent observations and work in the oceans. Listen to “Episode 5: Dive into Ocean Month” here.

Here's one quote from the NOAA podcast that endorses the ARCS mission:

"CORSON: I would say, you know, bring in the next generation of people who are connected to our environment. It's important that we explore issues around renewable energy, around reducing waste, around keeping plastic out of the ocean, and work to inspire our young scientists of tomorrow to tackle some of these challenges. We know that climate change is causing an extremely dynamic environment, and we want folks to remain engaged and inspired to address these challenges going forward.

HOST: Yes. Thank you. The future is bright with the young ones for sure. It's been a pleasure to talk with you in this Ocean Month, and I hope that you all go out and enjoy the ocean. Thank you."

2. ARCS Scholar Alum and 2018 Hall of Fame recipient Neil DeGrasse Tyson’s podcast is StarTalk Radio. The well-known astrophysicist and his co-hosts delve into physics, tech, biology, data science, economics, but also sports. (How they design and test unique soccer balls for each World Cup.) The podcast often features guest experts.

3. The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. Their Sidedoor podcast explains “behind the scenes” information about some of the exhibits

Ellen Renee Stofan, an ARCS Metro Washington Member, is the Under Secretary for Science and Research at The Smithsonian and was previously the Director of the National Air and Space Museum.

4. If you prefer learning about space science and exploration, look to NASA’s Curious Universe.

5. ARCS San Diego Alum Kellen Cavagnero has a podcast where he interviews scientists in different fields to talk about their research. Watch it on YouTube here.

6. Science has the Science Podcast each week where the host shares the latest scientific discoveries by researchers and news writers.

7. The Scientific American offers a wide range of topics for their podcast episodes, ranging from space to disease to insects and pollution.
