Website Public Pages

The ARCS website public pages are the public view of ARCS.  National and each chapter has their own set of pages to present ARCS to the public.  It is an important job of each chapter website administrator to keep the public pages up to date.  We have many options for displaying content on the public pages and lots of help within the organization to make our website look great.

News Articles

One of the easiest ways to keep your website looking fresh is to regularly add news articles.  A news article consists of a photograph and text.  It is very easy to add a news article to your website to be displayed for just your members, your scholar or to the public.  There is also an option for promoting your article to the national site.  This document contains all the details for creating articles.

Content Editing Overview

This training video covers all aspects of editing the public web pages including the WYSIWYG editor, updating panels and layouts, how to create articles and control where they are published.  Also review other content types: Media Galleries, Internal Ads, Featured Scholars and Scholar pages.  This is the link to the video.  Here are the PowerPoint slides

Flexbox Layout

The Flexbox llayout allows you to easily set up columns and rows of items that are managed to be a consistent size.  Flexbox layouts look good on mobile devices.  Besides replacing html tables, the flexbox layout helps overcome two issues with using regular panels.  The first is the problem with having images or text headers that are different sizes.  Usually, it looks best to have images the same size, but often the descriptive text varies in length and making it line up can be time consuming.  The other issue with regular panels is that on mobile devices they are displayed column by column rather than in “reading order” row by row.  So that if you have three rows of three items, instead of seeing the first row (1, 2, 3) on your mobile device you would see the first column (1, 4, 7).  Sometimes this doesn’t matter but if your collection is alphabetical or chronological then you want to preserve the “reading” order.  There is a short video that explains how flexbox layout work and how to use it.   And if you have an existing html table you need converted to a flex box layout, just ask for help.

Scholar Information on the Public Website

Although not required, most chapters publish the photos and biographies of at least their current scholars.  This video shows you how to easily create scholar pages for the public website given the photos and bios for your scholars.  The Phoenix chapter has shared their detailed instructions for updating an existing scholar page with new scholar information.  You can download the documentation here
